Childhood Obesity......an epidemic?

An epidemic of stupidity in people that have the ability to procreate maybe.

Article on ABCNews about childhood obesity

Ok, now completely ruling out the fact that some kids are big and they're just made that way, here are my suggestions on how to keep your kid from becoming ginormous.

1. Make them walk to school. Too dangerous you say? Walk with them. "Can't" you say? You must not care for your kid that much then.

2. Ease up on the fucking McDonalds already. Why not just let your kid start smoking too? Check food labels and don't give your kid "juice instead of soda" because you "think it has less sugar". You're high on crack if you believe that.

3. Make your kid play outside. Video games, while I enjoy playing them immensely, are not good for kids that need to expell some energy. Buy them a $300-1500 bicycle instead of that new game console or PC. Both have the same likelyhood of getting stolen and both deprecieate at the same rate. If you're worried about your kid getting abducted or molested, see bullet point 1. Supervise your damn children and teach them not to talk or take candy from strangers. The "village" won't protect them, since they most likely annoy the shit out of the "village" to begin with.

4. Don't be so damn quick to write that note to excuse your kid from Phys. Ed. So your kid doesn't like to play with others? Wow.........wait until he/she actually has to deal with people in a setting where they actually have to WORK with others. You going to write a note for your 20-something college dropout?

In short, don't depend on food manufacturers, schools, and the government to keep your kid from becoming unhealthy. It's your job and if you don't want to do it, kill your kid. You might as well, because fundamentally, it's what you're doing anyway.

"So you have a 1999 Corvette that's giving you a problem?"

"Sorry, Chevrolet doesn't stock or manufacture parts for that car anymore. We recommend that you upgrade to a 2005 Corvette."

We call that an "analogy" based on this article.

I give Microsoft about 2 weeks. They'll be posting an announcement on how they're either going to extend support and provide patches OR they're going to provide free upgrades to corporate/government customers and give the normal consumers the shaft.

Want to fill a hard drive fast?

Use this software and attach it to a dozen or so streams.

Station Ripper

It sucked down about a gigabyte today while I was at work.

Dell and their crazy coupon deals....

They got me. They got the tater.

On Slickdeals.net , they had a deal on the Dell Jukebox 20GB (DJ20). $179 for the DJ and the Belkin Desk Stand. Normally $279 for the DJ plus another $39 for the stand. So I bought one. It will make a nifty portable 20Gb hard drive and MP3 player for the car.

We found a pastor.

My friend, Fred, is going to marry Sheila and I. Let the planning begin! We haven't set a date yet, but we will come up with one soon!

Spam........... an interesting perspective....

Billboards - Spam. I didn't ask to see all that while driving

Homeless people begging for money - Spam. Like the Nigerian guys trying who promise you 1 gazillion dollars once you donate 5k

Fliers - Spam. (eventhough I'm always interested in what what is going on my city, but please don't put it on my car window without asking)

People who wear clothes that have the clothing logo in 20 inch font plastered on the chest - Spam. I'm not going to buy clothes just because they say Von Dutch so stop trying to get me to buy them

Cell phone company trademarked ring tones - Spam. It's like they're trying to get me to buy a nokia phone by playing it's themesong over and over.

Bumperstickers - Spam.

Racing Decals - Spam.

Racing Decals on Jackets - Spam.

I have thought of this before, using broad interpretation, anything that advertises anything you don't ask to be shown could be construed as spam.

Get Firefox.......

Get Firefox!

Quite possibly the best browser ever. I highly recommend this browser configured with the Gmail Notifier extension and the "Bug-me-not" extension. There's a ton of other extensions that are quite useful as well, I just haven't had the time to check them out. Firefox is a great way of keeping your Windows machine adware/spyware free.

Yahoo to buy MusicMatch for $160M

So Yahoo bought MusicMatch today for $160,000,000. I wonder if they will incorporate the "Launch" website and the MusicMatch online music service to create customized music catalog views for Yahoo members. We'll see I guess.

Killer Apps

Here are some killer apps I've found to be badassical in nature.

DesktopSidebar- It's for Windows and it displays all the info you'd ever need to see. I have it aggregating my favorite RSS news feeds as well as the weather and some important system statistics. On my home machine I even have it running through a slideshow of our pictures.

Firefox- Download Firefox. Best windows browser ever. I used to use Opera quite a bit. It had problems with PHP websites, so I switched.

GAIM - Better than AIM. Lightweight, full featured and works on multiple platforms.

Crap, I forgot where I downloaded the others, so here's a list:

ABC - Yet Another Bitorrent Client: I had to download a 475mb file using BT the other day and used this client. I was pulling 1.8MB/s at work. Fantastic.

Abilon - its another RSS Aggregator- perfect for reading all the news you'd want.

Picasa - It's like iPhoto for Winders.

Then of course there's all the anti-adware software, Adaware SE Personal, Spybot S&D, Spy Sweeper. Run 'em all if you use IE with any regularity.

I'll post more when I think of them.

New toys are good

I got a new toy this week. I realized, with the help of Sheila ;) , that having a CD Burner in just the laptop was a pain in the ass. We need to burn some CD's with pictures for family and what not. So I ordered up one for the PC. I decided on the Plextor PX-712A with the black bezel.

Specs!

12X DVD+R
8X DVD-R
4X DVD+RW
4X DVD-RW
16X DVD-ROM
48X CD-R
24X CD-RW
48X CD-ROM

I haven't burned anything with it yet. I set me back about as much as the Plextor 40/12/40 CDR drive that I donated to Phil, $122 from www.newegg.com .

Now I just need to go get a stack of CD-R's and DVD+R's and I'm set.
